Studio on the 3rd Floor

Director / Producer / Writer / Videographer

Studio on the 3rd Floor was the Northcott Theatre’s first Young Company show since 2019. The show centred on a day in the life of a busy TV studio as a new boss starts, and the whole team is in disarray. The show was originally conceived as a response to shows that I have seen over the years including Headlong’s production of ‘1984’, and the work of theatre company Le Navet Bete. I wanted to create a show that really challenged what was possible in the space we had, and that used as many of the skills and talents that the Northcott team has at its disposal.

Studio on the 3rd Floor is also the most technologically innovate show the Northcott has staged at the Barnfield since it took over management of the historic theatre in January 2022.

The production was a madcap mashup of live TV and behind-the-scenes studio mayhem. The Clifford Room was transformed into a live TV set featuring news and cooking segments from a zany Good Morning Britain-style show. Simultaneously, these TV segments were live-streamed and projected into the Barnfield auditorium, plunging audiences into the chaos of a TV studio control room.

From the Exeter Northcott Theatre’s website.

“It’s such a lovely environment to be in, you feel very safe and able to be yourself, and express yourself.”
